Chinese jade

10 Apr

Some time ago I bought a lovely Chinese jade pendant and all this time I’ve been thinking about how to use it.

I’ve always loved jade pendants from the very first time I saw a Pounamu from New Zealand Maori tradition but I haven’t been able to go and buy one so far…. I actually bought a beef bone maori pendant called “koru” few years ago at the Manly Sunday market in Australia, from a kiwi guy who hand carved it himself. His carvings were so beautiful that it took me quite some time to decide what to buy!  Anyway, since my dream to own a maori Pounamu is still far I decided to at least get me a lovely Chinese jade pendant in the meantime.

So, in the end I decided to make a gold chain using 8 pink quartz beads on both side (see why 8 beads in this post here), and adding an upcycled gold chain from an old and broken necklace that I’ve been given by a friend. I also matched the necklace with a pair of earings made with the same pink quartz beads and a green fluorite rice shaped bead.

Lunar New Year’s Shamballa

12 Feb

As the Lunar New Year has just been celabrated, welcoming the year of the Snake (), I decided to celebrate it too making myself a brand new Shamballa, with 8 beads.

In Chinese the word for “eight” sounds similar to the word which means “prosper” or “wealth“. In regional dialects the words for “eight” and “fortune” are also similar. There is also a visual resemblance between two digits, “88”, and 囍, the “shuāng xĭ” (“double joy”), a popular decorative design composed of two stylized characters 喜 (“xĭ” meaning “joy” or “happiness”).

The number 8 is viewed as such an auspicious number that even being assigned a number with several eights is considered very lucky. 🙂
