Tennis balls

1 Mar

For some time I have been thinking what to do with some old tennis balls that aren’t performing any more….. in the end I decided to make a couple of cordwrap. The most difficult part was to skin the ball, then I added a snap button and it was done.

I really like my new cordwraps and now I’m studying some other uses for recycled tennis balls….

Minor adjustments

This top was originally a dress. People who know me are well aware of the fact that I don’t wear dresses that often, so to speak. 🙄 Anyway, I bought this one because I liked the print and it was very cheap and, as predictable as it was, the dress was left unused in the closet for 5 or more years. Then, few weeks ago it suddenly resurfaced from the closet during a late spring-clean… In the spur of the moment I decided that if I wanted to use this garment it had to change. So, I cut the bottom at hips level and turned it into a top. Then I added some broderie anglaise to the sleeves and to the neckline and my brand new wearable top was ready!

Crochet market bag

19 Jul

Crochet market bags have become quite popular recently due to the growing environmental awareness and I have been thinking for a long time to make one myself. I’ve been looking for tutorials and patterns on the web but in the end I decided to go with the flow and let my creativity free. 😀

The result is this red white and blue market bag that my roommate Nemo decided to test straight away. I used scraps of cotton threads so it’s a win-win situation.

Nemo says, recycle. Upcycle. Be kind to the world and stop using plastic bags!

Recycling denim

22 Jan

I love to recycle. So, when my brother asked me to shorten his new pair of jeans I decided to use the remnants to make some always useful zip pouches.

To bring some colour to the pouches I matched a lovely Ikea fabric, with orange cat prints for one, and some orange lace for the other. My magic sewingmachine made the rest….

I love the result.

Upcycling waste matter

24 Feb

Here is a bracelet I’ve been thinking about for a while….

I have all these leather strings, which are waste matter that I have been given by an acquaitance whose factory matches fabric with leather for shoes, and I wanted to make something with it.

I decided to combine the black leather string with a silver ring and here is the result. I’ve been told that it has a masculine feel about it, and I also think it looks a bit primitive…. 🙂

Birthday gift

17 Apr

So, today is my birthday and every year I try to take this day off from work to avoid stress and have a relaxing day all for myself.

And today I used my very well deserved free time for making myself a birthday gift.  🙂

I had a small piece of light pink 50% viscose/50% cotton fabric with a kind of beehive weaving that I cut from the sleeves of a t-shirt because they were too long, and I wanted to do something out of it for a very long time.

I actually never wore the t-shirt, but I think I’m going to wear this bracelet…

I added some charms: an owl to make me wiser (I really need it despite my growing age…), a little rabbit with the word “fuku engraved on it (which stands for blessing, fortune, luck, wealth… you choose!), a little bell to protect from bad spirits (you never have enough protection!), and  a pink glass bead (for a girly touch…).

I quite like it and I think I’m going to wear it pretty often… despite the noise from the bell… 🙂  ..or maybe because of it. 😀

Candlelight

31 Jan

As I was practising with my crochet I hit on a shell edging tutorial and  decided to give it a try.

I also had a couple of glass jam jars that I was reluctant to throw away (read “recycle”), so it came to my mind that I could upcycle them adding a nice edging and transforming them into candle-holders.

Using some cotton yarn that I already had I first made the red edging and then, when I felt more confident and adventurous, I crocheted the white/red one. 🙂
