Lunar New Year’s Shamballa

12 Feb

As the Lunar New Year has just been celabrated, welcoming the year of the Snake (), I decided to celebrate it too making myself a brand new Shamballa, with 8 beads.

In Chinese the word for “eight” sounds similar to the word which means “prosper” or “wealth“. In regional dialects the words for “eight” and “fortune” are also similar. There is also a visual resemblance between two digits, “88”, and 囍, the “shuāng xĭ” (“double joy”), a popular decorative design composed of two stylized characters 喜 (“xĭ” meaning “joy” or “happiness”).

The number 8 is viewed as such an auspicious number that even being assigned a number with several eights is considered very lucky. 🙂

My friend Paola’s husband also had his share of my craftsmanship… I really couldn’t neglect him! 😉

So I made this Shamballa bracelet especially for him, with grey shimmering ceramic beads and black cotton waxed string. Each bead represents a member of his family. I think he appreciated it.

Anyway, it looks better on his wrist than in this photo…

Pink Shamballa

27 Nov

Some time ago I bought some pink/fuchsia silk cord with the idea to make a Shamballa bracelet with it. Finally I have found some gold beads with a large hole that looked like they could match well with the string. And here is the result. I bit unusual, but I like it. Moreover I realized that working with silk string is a lot easier than using waxed cotton cord.

Shamballa

The latest addition to my crafts portfolio: a shamballa bracelet. Obviously it’s the black one in the picture.

It really took me no time at all to make it and the result is pretty stunning, or at least this is what I’ve been told by some friends.

I could decide to re-make it because it didn’t come out exactly as I wished, and the cord is cheap enough (0.50 €/cent per meter). 😉
